Narrative Codes

Roland Barthes developed a concept that every narrative is interwoven with five codes that drive one to maintain interest in a story. The first two codes involve ways of creating suspense in narrative, the first by unanswered questions, the second by anticipation of an action's resolution. These two codes are essentially connected to the temporal order of the narrative.

The Hermeneutic Code
The hermeneutic code refers to plot elements of a story that are not explained. They exist as enigmas that the reader wishes to be resolved. A detective story, for example, is a narrative that operates primarily by the hermeneutic code. A crime is exposed or postulated and the rest of the narrative is devoted to answering questions raised by the initial event.

The Proairetic Code

The proairetic code refers to plot events that imply further narrative action. For example, a story character confronts an adversary and the reader wonders what the resolution of this action will be. Suspense is created by action rather than by a reader's wish to have mysteries explained. The final three codes are related to how the reader comprehends and interprets the narrative discourse.

The Semic Code

A seme is a unit of meaning or a sign that express cultural stereotypes. These signs allow the author to describe characters, settings and events. The semic code focuses upon information that the narration provides in order to suggest abstract concepts. Any element in a narrative can suggest a particular, often additional, meaning by way of connotation through a correlation found in the narrative. The semic code allows the text to 'show' instead of 'tell' by describing material things.

The Symbolic Code

The symbolic code refers to a structural juxtaposition that organizes meanings by way of antitheses, binary oppositions or sexual and psychological conflicts. These oppositions can be expressed through action, character and setting.

The Cultural Code

The cultural code designates any element in a narrative that refers to common bodies of knowledge such as historical, mythological or scientific. The cultural codes point to knowledge about the way the world works as shared by a community or culture.
Together, these five codes function like a 'weaving of voices'. Barthes assigns to the hermeneutic the Voice of Truth; to the proairetic code the voice of Empirics ; to the semic the Voice of the Person; to the cultural the Voice of Science; and to the symbolic the Voice of Symbol. According to Barthes, they allowing the reader to see a work not just as a single narrative line but as a braiding of meanings that give a story its complexity and richness.

We see the MI5 logo as a pattern - it splits and moves around the screen, duplicating into many other logos, including the BOND crest - symbols for sun, mon and earth circle around the screen

Proposal#

The aim of this project is to show our ability to design an opening titles for the new James bond film called Skyfall.

We will be collaborating with others in the group and will be expected to demonstrate your ability to work in a professional graphic design team. The project is based on a real work experience brief. The clients will be visiting the lessons to discuss your progress and give feedback about your designs.

While working towards completion of the multi-media application we will also be given the chance to show our ability to work in a range of different skills with digital arts, including Photoshop, Movie Maker and Adobe Flash. We must appraise these applications for the role that they will perform for your project aims/objectives and research other software that may be more helpful for future consideration.

I will work from a client design brief and in your team are expected to take part in investigative research and activities which will assist you to express yourself creatively within a range of mixed media art techniques, experimental photography, graphics, collage, drawing, painting and print.

This initial project will be completed by working together in small design teams, evidence must be supplied to show your ability to work effectively as part of a team. Time-management skills and organizational skills will also be assessed by your tutor and through lessons centred on group/ self reflection and regular design team reviews. Apart from your team evidence you will also be expected to provide an individual design that you have worked on independently.
This Multi-Media Design Project based on the new film t ‘James Bond - Skyfall’
The theme for the opening credit sequence will be based on the traditional Bond style as originally
developed by Robert Brown John and will encompass a Retro-Pattern background with a running narrative.
The cities involved in the film are a contribution to your design theme - Istanbul, Shanghai,
Scotland, China, London and should be related to the content of the theme by the request of the client.

Iconic images related to Bond that you can use are any of the following, female form, Aston Martin, Watch
Face, Bond’s gun, union jack, passport crest, parachute, city skyline, retro silver plane, helicopter.
The plot of the film involves an attack on M by an agent she double crossed some years before, Bond’s
loyalty is tested to the limit when he realizes that the establishment that he works for has been infiltrated at
the highest level. Bond is offered a choice does he continue to work for a corrupt secret government bent on mass manipulation or does he join forces with the villain to defeat the system.
The short film will show how you can create a piece that portrays a clear visual language linked to the
essence of ‘Bond nostalgic magic’ and demonstrates your ability to be able to communicate through
narrative form using the language of art, photography, typography and graphic design.

a3 designs

The aim of our project was to make a rebranding of ChiFest. We were asked to produce designs for posters, websites, make a new logo and map. During the project we had to research different artists who makes information graphics, graphic design and illustration. Also we had to look at different festivals logoes, websites and identity so we can see what trends there are in this area.

At the begining I looked at different festival logos and posters, and noticed that they mostly have bright vivid color, dynamic layout and warm mood. And then I tried to make my first responses. My first logo idea for Chi fest http://dimonstrik.blogspot.com/2012/02/firrst-logo-idea-for-chi-fest.html it is very simple and colorful, but I dont think it works well because it reminds about chiuld toys or things like that. Third logo idea https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXkMFfs2l-iPcWr-3VYalPYsEjDcqWy3i1h8PY5EsOL0Kx96W-Rl7m_CwmMAQsDsKlYQgF5W7Q_6-e5TsNs4h_LFsCper7cTe-WPNjZPZ-gWKwSmdKJuU8suG6vg9whv-Xcs9EAsYNXP2V/s1600/Logo5.jpg Is a bit better, it is colorful and warm. The color palette works well together, But I see no way to use it in my posters. And here is my final one: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxUKJy3mI7jlysatw3eiQ5kAUZVo4h6PEypVnf0KOOSgoCKF6gm0pDhzvwoCipZTAjNdrGNA6QfechUt6dcXKcSJRQldw-B8KMAVuwfWzicSiDIL3Ai7rbYD0-AHJoh-AwsLrxSbI0OMZk/s1600/Logo3.jpg The shape is simplified and caricatured outline of flower, so it will work good for the festival. I tried many color palettes and found out that red and blue works the best together, and also they are colors of UK flag. So this one is definetly going to be presented for the client as final one.

Based on logo design and colors I created a poster and a web-site with flyer. For the poster I used photo of myself playing bass guitar, so it will show that festival is connested with music and stuff. Also I did some flyer based on my lowtech work, and made in a bit different way and technique than poster, but using same colors and basic style. It is very flat and simplified, and remids a bit of Matt Needle style.

The final piece was a map of festival. It has to show the locations of different activities around the college territory. I did a research into information graphics, ans then begin to work on my own. I used grass texture for the background, I simplified shapes of the building, to make it easaly understandable, and I designed a set of own icons to indicate activities.

Collage

Collage created from different car cutouts from old 80s magazines.

My response to cubism work. I painted distorted image of a piano and a finger with acrylic paint.

I decided to finish only center of a image to make it look uncompleted so we can see al stages from scratch to detailed shading in one piece.

Lowtech work

This is my response to German Expressionists work. I made a building of typical Chichester house using broken lines, distorted shapes and unnatural proportions. Also to give it a bit of depth I used different thickness outlines for different types of shapes.

Information Graphics

Here we can see a great information graphics example. We can clearly see the details of a plane

exterior and interior at the same time and also the sizes of it.

German Expressionism

John Grimwade

He is a information graphics designer who creates various design pieces like posters, icons, maps and diagrams.
Information graphics is the way ro present information in the way so it is easy understand and attractive to watch. John uses thin and clean lines, almost no shading, and very light colors, that dont cats attention too much. Also he used guidelines and arrows to point at neccessary information.

Information graphics

Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics present complex information quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing, and education. With an information graphic, computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians develop and communicate concepts using a single symbol to process information.

This is my version of ChiFest map. I have placed simplicified building shapes and made four icons for different events in the fest.

Edward McKnight Kauffer was one of Britain’s most highly influential 20th Century Poster Artists and Graphic Designers. Beginning his professional life as a painter, Kauffer soon embraced poster art as a form of visual communication, enabling the public to view Modern Art through the display of his posters on the streets.

Edward uses mostly primary colors with a little addition of secondary ones. He does not uses completely black and completely white color. His works gives us a sunny and positive feel.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass is graphic designer who created his works in the middle of 20th century.
Most of his works are movie posters. He has workt on a such films like James Bond, Vertigo, West Side Story, etc. His style is recognisible by the shapes and tones he uses. Also he uses hand drawn typography simplified and nearly cubist shapes with only 3 colors. His works looks very simple, but at the same time they are quite memorable.

Big Active

Big Active is a D&AD award winning creative consultancy specializing in art direction, graphic design and the representation of leading image-makers. Big Active believes in creative networks - its aim is to produce creative design and commercial art based upon ideas with an accessible common touch.

Filipe JArdim

Filipe uses simple brush and paint strokes to produce his works. They are mostly sketchy and rough and a bit childish. To be honest, I have no idea, why people like that kind of style because for me it looks like few minutes sketch of an artist that is not realy good at painting.
